Compared to the National Trend

In January 2023, 6,933 new manufactured homes were shipped, an increase of 522 homes or 8.1 percent compared to December 2022, yet a decrease of 2,177 homes or 23.9 percent compared to January 2022. Compared with the same month last year, shipments of both single-section and multisection homes were down, by 22.5 percent and 24.7 percent, respectively. Total floors shipped in January 2023 were 10,799, a decrease of 3,459 floors or 24.3 percent compared with the same month last year.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of shipments was 84,340 in January 2023, down 4.7 percent compared to the adjusted rate of 88,538 in December 2022. The SAAR corrects for normal seasonal variations and projects annual shipments based on the current monthly total.

In January 2023, 6,951 new manufactured homes were produced, an increase of 545 homes or 8.5 percent compared to December 2022, yet a decrease of 2,159 homes or 23.7 percent compared to January 2022. MHI's Monthly Economic Report includes numbers for both manufactured home production and shipments. The difference between the two is attributed to the number of homes that have been produced, but their destinations are pending. There were 55 FEMA designated units produced in January 2023.

The number of plants reporting production in January 2023 was 145 and the number of active corporations was 34, the same number of plants and corporations as in the prior month.

In this issue of the Economic Report, MHI has included a cumulative summary of new homes that have qualified for the ENERGY STAR label in 2022, the industry’s flagship energy efficiency program, which is shown on Table 29. In 2022, ENERGY STAR homes represented 26.1% of total new homes.
