In March 2023, 7,646 new manufactured homes were produced, an increase of 1,069 homes or 16.3 percent compared to February 2023, yet a decrease of 3,633 homes or 32.2 percent compared to March 2022. MHI's Monthly Economic Report includes numbers for both manufactured home production and shipments. The difference between the two is attributed to the number of homes that have been produced, but their destinations are pending. There were no FEMA designated units produced in March 2023.
The number of plants reporting production in March 2023 was 146 and the number of active corporations was 35, the same number of plants and corporations as the prior month.
In March 2023, 7,665 new manufactured homes were shipped, an increase of 1,101 homes or 16.8 percent compared to February 2023, and a decrease of 3,603 homes or 32.0 percent compared to March 2022. Compared with the same month last year, shipments of both single-section and multi- section homes were down, by 26.4 percent and 35.9 percent, respectively. Total floors shipped in March 2023 were 11,979, a decrease of 6,020 floors or 33.4 percent compared with the same month last year.
The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of shipments was 80,636 in March 2023, down 2.7 percent compared to the adjusted rate of 82,863 in February 2023. The SAAR corrects for normal seasonal variations and projects annual shipments based on the current monthly total.
Cumulative shipments through March this year totaled 21,162 homes compared with 29,653 homes for the same three months of 2022, a net decrease of 28.6 percent.
