In September 2022, 9,381 new manufactured homes were produced, a decrease of 1,341 homes or 12.5 percent compared to August 2022, yet an increase of 356 homes or 3.9 percent compared to September 2021. MHI's Monthly Economic Report includes numbers for both manufactured home production and shipments. The difference between the two is attributed to the number of homes that have been produced, but their destinations are pending. There were 256 FEMA designated units produced in September 2022, whereas 3 FEMA designated units were produced in September last year.
The number of plants reporting production in September 2022 was 144 and the number of active corporations was 35, the same number of plants and corporations as in the prior month.
In September 2022, 9,363 new manufactured homes were shipped, a decrease of 1,352 homes or 12.6 percent compared to August 2022, and an increase of 338 homes or 3.7 percent compared to September 2021. Compared with the same month last year, shipments of single-section homes were up by 17.5%, while shipments of multi-section homes were down by 6.2 percent. Total floors shipped in September 2022 were 14,341, a decrease of just four floors compared with the same month last year.
The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of shipments was 109,594 in September 2022, down 7.3 percent compared to the adjusted rate of 118,237 in August 2022. The SAAR corrects for normal seasonal variations and projects annual shipments based on the current monthly total.
Cumulative shipments for January through September this year totaled 89,771 homes compared with 79,438 homes for the same nine months of 2021, a net increase of 13.0 percent.
